First gold medals took Poland and Czech Republic!
Polish cyclist Martyna Klekot and Czech Petr Vakoc became heroes of the first day WUC Cycling 2014 in Jelenia Góra. Both won in time trial. Poland, host nation, became first leader of the medal table.
First on the track near Cieplice competed women. Punctually at 11 a.m. Japanese Anna Ito started her challenge. If athletes wanted to achieve a leader position, they should have had a result better than 40 minutes. Monika Brzeźna (POL) did it. She leaded the competition for a long time. Surprisingly better than Brzeźna was her team-mate Martyna Klekot (POL) with a result 38:18:98. Finally Brzeźna was third, because Kathrin Hammes (GER) finished with 13 seconds better result. Martyna Klekot was happy about the competition. – It was tough race for me, but I am really satisfied with the result. Gold won in my own country, it tastes extremely good – said us after the race Martyna.
In men time trial main favourites were Czech Petr Vakoc and Pole Adrian Kurek. They met the expectations and both took medals. Vakoc finished first, Kurek was third, second – Tim Gebauer from Germany. He was a little bit disappointed, but after few minutes realized the success. – I ride here for my country and university, it’s great pleasure and I hope that my bronze medal give them a little bit of happiness – said Kurek. Czech winner Petr Vakoc was smiling all the time after the race. – It was first time when I won a race this year. So far I have already two second places, last week on our national championships. So for a couple of days I have been on the podiums third times, it’s very good. I am happy I could win here – explained Vakoc. And added: – The race was very difficult. In the end it was really, really close. I was also afraid of Adrian Kurek. I knew that he can go really fast in the time trial. But I really wanted to be on the podium, maybe hoping for the first place. But it was not so easy.

Now it is time for mass start. Poles promised that they do everything to take second gold. – In the evening we will be thinking about special tactic. We hope that someone from our time will manage to win the race – said Adrian Kurek from Poland. Petr Vakoc added – It’s hard to say how it will be tomorrow, it is very difficult track, lots of up and down. If you want to succeed you have to got really strong team. I’m sure it will be a hard race.
